Today, many patients are seeking out less invasive procedures with minimal downtime – this “scar-less” facelift has therefore become more and more popular as it’s a quick and relatively painless procedure that one can choose to undergo.
Who Would Benefit From The Thread Lift Procedure?
By the time we reach the age of 40, the effect of gravity starts to become visible on the face. This is because as you age, you lose the fat in your face, your cheekbones become less prominent and the thinning skin collects as jowls in the jawline.
For those who start to show these signs of ageing, but still feel that a traditional facelift procedure is too invasive, or for those who feel that the sagging does not yet warrant full surgery, a thread lift may be a great option.
The introduction of the latest technology in thread lifting, Silhouette Soft, has increased the popularity of this technique. These threads have tiny cogs along the length of the thread, which perform 2 functions: firstly, they provide anchorage points to achieve a secure lift, and secondly, they stimulate the production of more collagen along the length of the thread.
What To Expect From a Thread Lifting Procedure?
This minimally invasive alternative lift can redefine the cheeks, tighten the skin around the eyes, reduce the nasolabial lines, lift the brow and control the sagging in the minor jowls and neck.
Due to the fact that ageing is a complex process that doesn’t just affect the skin, thread lifting is usually used in conjunction with a number of other procedures such as Muscle Relaxing Injections, Dermal Fillers, Chemical Peels and lasers to enhance an overall rejuvenating effect.
Are There Any Risks Involved?
Risks are minimal and should it occur, usually temporary. Sometimes asymmetry in the face and puckering of the skin can occur. Additionally, patients with extremely thin skin may experience visible threads. Additionally, in some cases, Hematoma and infection may occur but are treatable in most cases.
The most common side effect, in Dr Nerina Wilkinson’s opinion, is an unsatisfactory result which is usually due miscommunication between Doctor and patient, something we try at all costs to avoid at our clinic. It is however possible that the thread will not achieve the lift you are looking for, in which case the only other option is a surgical facelift.
Most patients we see at the practice who have a mild amount of sagging are suitable candidates for a thread lifting procedure, provided they have realistic expectations of what the surgery can achieve. Dr Nerina Wikinson will however make sure that your skin is thick enough to produce the desired results, as too thin skin is not suitable for the thread lifts. If a significant amount of lifting is required, she may recommend the possibility of a surgical facelift.
The thread lift works through Dr Wilkinson inserting tiny threads into the subcutaneous fat underneath the skin and gently pulling them back to create a lift. The threads leave virtually no scars, are simple to insert and, there’s very little recovery time needed. However, it is important to understand that the lift they produce is not as great as with standard face lifting.
The procedure can take between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the amount and position of the threads used. You will be admitted to our clinic-based procedure room as a day/morning case. The treatment is usually carried out under a light oral sedation and local anaesthetic. Plasters are applied over the threads to prevent loss of the tightening effect over the next 3 days.
You will be discharged with plasters overlying the threads and should arrange for someone to accompany you on your way home. The plasters are removed after 3 days, while pain and discomfort can be present for between 3 and 7 days.
Most patients return to normal activities within 3 to 5 days, depending on their swelling and bruising. You can expect to see results for 18 months on average.
Many patients continue to undergo multiple thread lifting procedures throughout their lives, whilst others may decide to progress to a more conventional facelift after some time.
