Infuse Me With Goodness – The benefits of IV infusions written by Dr Marisa Heyns

It has been a few interesting months (71 days to be exact and counting), and for most of us, we are still trying to figure out the extent of damage this horrid little virus is having, not only on our economy and our livelihoods but also on our health and wellbeing. And although social isolation and distancing have certainly delayed our normal flu season, we will probably have to prepare for an interesting winter, having to keep our minds and bodies in tip-top shape.

Here at Dr Nerina Wilkinson + Associates, we are really going above and beyond to ensure the safety of our clients and ourselves to curb the spread of COVID-19. (evidence included below). Although it might sound insignificant or non-essential to come for your Muscle Relaxing Injections (to relieve those concerned brows), your health and safety (and flawless skin) is extremely essential to us.

And so, on the ‘staying healthy’ note, we have recently added extra immune-boosting goodness to our treatments.

Mainline Me With The Vitamins Doc!

Nutritional Intravenous therapy has been around for yonks. There seems to be a definite divide among medical professionals and the public, on whether these treatments are a fad, beneficial, or just plain quackery!

I, myself, have had my doubts in the past, however, after doing a short locum stint at a complementary cancer treatment center that focuses mainly on the use of intravenous therapy with vitamins, minerals, and potent anti-oxidants, and seeing the remarkable improvement in the quality of life of these end-stage cancer patients, I could not help to be swayed in the opinion that there is certainly place for these complementary treatments.

So What Is The Deal With IV Infusions?

First of all, let’s be clear – IV vitamin, mineral, and antioxidant infusions, in my opinion, are not meant as a sole or replacement treatment for infectious disease. It however can play a significant role in radically improving how the body responds to disease with or without antibiotics, chemotherapy, or chronic medication.

In an ideal world, our diets would provide us with the optimal amount of essential nutrients to not just survive but to thrive. Unfortunately, modern living and agricultural practices make it harder than you’d think. In a time when the average person is truly struggling with the basics such as getting enough fresh air and sleep, eating a balanced diet that is appropriately nutrient-dense is challenging and even when we try, chronic stress, environmental pollutants, and nutrient-depleted foods make it nearly impossible for us to get the number of vitamins and minerals we really need.

Why Can’t I Just Take An Oral Supplement?

Routes of administration greatly affect bioavailability by changing the number of biologic barriers a drug must cross in order to get into the bloodstream.

IV administration is the most reliable method for delivering drugs to the systemic circulation because it bypasses many of the absorption barriers (like the gut lining) and thereby deliver 100% of the intended dose of ingredients. It is also one of the preferred routes of administration to rapidly achieve therapeutically effective drug concentrations.

Won’t It All Flush Down The Loo When I Go For A Wee?

The answer is: actually not! The body will use what it needs to replenish itself and discard the rest. A study on the benefits of Vit C showed that when we are healthy we usually require between 2000 and 4000 mg of Vit C a day (lots of oranges, or Vit C scoops), however, when we exceed these levels in a healthy state, the high dose of Vit C causes some undesirably upset stomachs. However, when we are fighting off the cold or flu, our cellular levels of Vit C can drop by 50%, and then, when we are taking doses of Vit C up to 8000mg in some cases, there is NO stomach upset. This proves not only that supplementing with Vit C is indeed beneficial, but that the body will grab what it needs, and this is usually at a lot higher dosages than we expect.

IV nutritional therapy is therefore a convenient way to get the best quality and correct quantity of essential vitamins and minerals.

What Are The Other Benefits Of IV Infusions?

At Nerina Wilkinson + Associates, we believe in creating a tailored treatment plan for each client to suit their individual needs, and our IV Infusions are no different.

The benefits of our Aesthetic Couture IV infusions include:

  • Boost energy
  • Immune boosting support
  • Anti-ageing and skin brightening
  • Detoxification
  • Reduction in stress
What Are The Ingredients Used In Our IV Drips?

There are numerous studies around that sings the praises of high doses of Vit C and Glutathione in its ability to fight disease and even certain cancers, or the powerful immune-boosting effects of the family of Vit B.

We choose only the best quality medical grade ingredients that are compounded specifically for IV therapies, to ensure that each drip is not only effective but compatible for infusion and safe to use.

Some of our go-to ingredients include:
  1. Vitamin B complexes – to boost the immune system and increase energy levels. Vitamin B also helps to improve concentration and boost brain functioning.
  2. Vitamin C – a powerful antioxidant that destroys free radicals in the body. Vitamin C also brightens the skin and increases the production of new collagen in the skin and body.
  3. Magnesium – reduces inflammation in the body helping with muscle aches and pains. Magnesium can also improve moods and help with sleep.
  4. Glutathione – a potent antioxidant that naturally occurs in our cells and aims to fight oxidation and cellular damage. Glutathione is also well known for its skin-brightening benefits, leaving your skin with a healthy glow.
How Many Treatments Do I Need?

It really depends on your needs and the severity of your symptoms. For energy and immune-boosting support, 4 – 6 treatments, 2 – 4 weeks apart should keep you covered until past the winter season. And just as one chemical peel is not going to give you a lifelong glowing skin, one drip is not going to be enough to complement a 6-month anti-ageing or brightening skin protocol. Here we would advise 1 treatment monthly to boost results. Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet, but this is probably as close as it will get.

Where Do IV Infusions Fit Into Dr Nerina Wilkinson & Aesthetic Couture?

Our IV infusions are meant to supplement (among other things) your current skin treatment plan, whether it is as part of your depigmentation treatments, or if you are boosting your system to speed up recovery pre and post-surgery or after an invasive skin treatment. And yes, if you feel your system needs a bit of an immune or energy boost. However, in the current climate of COVID-19, if you have symptoms of a sore throat, high fevers, body aches, a cough and or shortness of breath, please contact your nearest COVID hotline instead of jumping straight into IV therapy…

So What Is The Take Home Message?

IV nutritional therapies are an excellent way to give your body the boost it needs to function optimally, and during this winter season, I would say, we can all do with a bit of Vitamin Love.

Please feel free to contact us if you require any further information about this amazing treatment.

In times of COVID; stay safe and carry on.
