Labiaplasty in South Africa
What is labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure primarily focusing on the reshaping or resizing of the labia, particularly the labia majora and minora.
Labiaplasty is an increasingly common solution to rectifying the dissatisfaction some women feel regarding their genitals, in particular, their labia. This procedure reduces the size of the labia majora, minora, or both.
Various factors, such as genetics, childbirth, or ageing, can affect the appearance and comfort of the labia. Opting for labiaplasty can pave the way for enhanced confidence and relief.
At Dr Nerina Wilkinson + Associates, we tailor the procedure, addressing both labia majora and minora aesthetic concerns, to help patients attain their ideal genital aesthetics and comfort.

Frequently asked questions about labiaplasty procedures
What is the purpose of labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a procedure that aims to decrease the size of the labia minora (inner vaginal lips) so that it is flush with the labia majora (outer vaginal lips); it involves the shortening or reshaping the vaginal lips and can involve several different surgical techniques depending on the patient’s specific situation.
How is labiaplasty surgery performed?
The labiaplasty procedure takes up to an hour and a half and is performed in our day clinic under local anaesthetic. There are several methods of performing labia surgery, including:
- Totally altering the labia minora – This procedure includes reduction of the hood, which is the skin covering the clitoris. Simple amputation of the excess skin and over-sewing of the edge may be required.
- Removal of a wedge-shaped section – In most cases, Dr Wilkinson prefers to remove a wedge-shaped section of skin towards the back of the labia. The advantage of this method is that it leaves virtually undetectable scars. However, it should be noted that the reduction can cause the skin to feel tight (however this could also be a bonus to many patients).
Are you awake during labiaplasty surgery?
Labia surgery is performed under conscious oral sedation with local anaesthetic. You will be totally relaxed but awake throughout the procedure.
Who would benefit from labiaplasty?
Women with excess skin on their labia might be suffering from a lack of self-confidence or even discomfort in more extreme scenarios. And in some cases, these problems may even affect their sex life. If you’ve experienced a lack of confidence when wearing bathing suits, or discomfort when doing sports like running or cycling, and are in excellent physical and mental health, you’re an ideal candidate for labia surgery.
How long is labiaplasty recovery?
You’re likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following your surgery, but you’ll be up and about within 12 to 24 hours. Most of your discomfort can be controlled by medication prescribed by your doctor. Although the stitches are dissolving there may be a few little knots to be removed at 10 – 14 days after surgery if they don’t fall out by themselves. You can expect some swelling and bruising after surgery which differs from patient to patient. It depends on the extent of the surgery as well as the individual’s tendency to bruise.
Are there any risks involved with labiaplasty surgery?
Any and all complications that can arise both during and after you’ve undergone labiaplasty are discussed with you in-depth during your consultation.
A common concern regarding labia surgery is whether or not it affects sexual pleasure. The short answer is, no. Since the procedure does not involve the sensory nerves of the vagina, there is no need for alarm.
What to expect after labiaplasty?
Post-labiaplasty, anticipate some swelling and discomfort lasting for about five to seven days and some light bleeding might occur initially. It is important to observe regular and careful hygiene per your post-operative guidance to deter infections.
Showering is typically safe after a couple of days. It’s vital to rest, steering clear of strenuous activities for at least a week and abstain from sexual activity for six weeks. This period ensures any swelling has completely subsided, and the recovery process progresses smoothly.
When do labiaplasty stitches fall out?
After undergoing a labiaplasty procedure, sutures are typically removed after two weeks. Before removal, it’s recommended to avoid tight-fitting underwear and the use of tampons. Most stitches used in labiaplasty are dissolvable and will naturally break down within this timeframe.
How to relieve itching after labiaplasty?
Itching is a common side effect during the healing process. To alleviate itching, ensure the area stays clean and dry, and follow the topical ointment recommendation from your doctor during your recovery.. Refrain from scratching, as this can disrupt healing. If itching persists or seems severe, please contact your doctor to rule out potential infections or complications.
How much does labiaplasty cost in South Africa?
The costs of the procedure will all depend on the extent of time spent in theatre and this can only be determined during a full examination. The average cost of a labiaplasty procedure is +/- R 35 000 – R 40 000.
Additional costs to expect:
* Consultation fee: R 2 850
* Medication required for surgery: +/- R 1 400 – R 1 600
* Additional overnight at our facility +/- R 8 500
* Other investigations advised by Dr Wilkinson
Please note that these fees are only estimates and can change once you have had an assessment during your first consultation.

A physical examination and assessment of your medical history, current medication and overall health will help us decide on the most suitable treatment for you.
In our initial consultation, it’s important to discuss your expectations frankly and we will provide our expert opinion to help you make an informed decision. We will discuss the variables that may affect the treatments: such as your age, medical illnesses and social habits. We will also describe the labiaplasty procedure in detail, explaining the risks and limitations.

You’re advised to take a rest period of one week, during which you shouldn’t take part in any strenuous activity such as lifting heavy objects as it can take up to two weeks for any swelling to fully subside.
After you’ve undergone the procedure, you’ll have to wait at least six weeks for the swelling to completely subside before you resume normal sexual activity.
During the recovery process, you can expect to have some swelling and experience some pain for approximately five to seven days. Light bleeding can also be experienced during the first day or so in which you’ll need to be vigilant about personal hygiene to prevent infection, but you’ll be able to shower after a couple of days. Sutures are removed after a fortnight, before then, you should avoid wearing constricting underwear, and using tampons.
