Relax dynamic muscles and reduce unwanted lines associated with ageing.
Facial wrinkles are mainly caused by dynamic facial expressions, so halting them temporarily reduces or even removes facial wrinkles over time.
Dr Nerina Wilkinson has personally been using botulinum toxin injections to reduce her lines and wrinkles for the past 20 years. Her goal is not to create an expressionless face but to achieve a refreshed, relaxed look.
What are botulinum toxin injections?
Botulinum toxin treatments (Neuromodulators) are popular non-surgical procedures that appeal to adults looking to attain a more youthful and relaxed appearance, and also to younger clients who want to prevent the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.
Cosmetic Botulinum toxin therapy is classified as a schedule 4 medicine and is derived from a bacterium called Clostridium Botulinum, and acts as a neurotoxin targeting the nervous system, disrupting the nerve signalling processes that stimulate muscle contraction which stops muscle cells from contracting, allowing the muscle to relax and leave the skin smooth and rejuvenated.

How does botulinum toxin treat wrinkles and ageing?
1. Increases Skin Elasticity
Studies have shown that, unlike previously thought, muscle relaxing injections do more than simply paralyse facial muscles in the short term. Instead, the drug may be a leading cause for increased skin elasticity. Scientists have found that those who undergo Botulinum toxin injections may experience up to a 30% increase in the elasticity of their skin. What this means is that there’s more to the procedure than simply temporarily paralysing certain muscles. Specifically, elasticity in the skin helps to erase wrinkles over time, and studies have shown that even deep, ingrained wrinkles can be significantly reduced through the use of Muscle Relaxing Injections.
2. Fights Wrinkle Formation
It’s not just old wrinkles that botulinum toxin fights against. With increased skin elasticity, this treatment allows for the prevention of new wrinkles and may be responsible for the prevention of wrinkles over time in individuals who receive injections frequently. Muscle relaxing injections may affect both the skin and the muscles of patients, making it more difficult for wrinkles to form over time and protecting from the negative effects of ageing.
Who is the ideal candidate for botulinum toxin injections?
Botulinum toxin injections are suitable for those who want to rid the face of wrinkles, combat signs of ageing, treat excessive sweating, and even those who struggle with Bruxism (teeth grinding).
As with all cosmetic procedures, patient selection is probably the most important factor contributing to a successful outcome. The use of Botulinum toxin injections has successfully been used for the treatment of dynamic lines of the upper face (expression lines on the forehead and frown lines).
Great results can also be achieved in perioral rhytids (smoking lines), lip lengthening, “gummy smile”, drooping nasal tip, labiodental creases (drooping mouth corners), wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet), neckband and chin softening.
As with any medical aesthetic procedure, it is best to discuss your specific medical history and needs with your aesthetic doctor. Book an appointment to consult with our team of Medical Aesthetic Specialists.
How can botulinum toxin treat Bruxism (teeth grinding)?
Bruxism is a common and debilitating problem. Not only does it wear down, break and damage the teeth and fillings but regular and persistent grinding of the teeth can also result in jaw ache, headache, neck ache and earache. Bruxism usually happens subconsciously as we sleep. It is often a consequence of stress or anxiety.
There are two classifications of the problem:
Awake Bruxism: is characterised by involuntary clenching of the teeth and jaw bracing in reaction to certain stimuli. There is generally no tooth grinding with awake bruxism.
Sleep Bruxism: is characterised by automatic teeth grinding with rhythmic and sustained jaw muscle contractions
Commonly treated with uncomfortable mouth guards and muscular relaxation exercises – both techniques are generally found to be ineffective. Here at Dr Nerina Wilkinson + Associates, we can help with this problem by using precisely administered injections of Muscle Relaxing Injections to weaken the Masseter muscle, the muscle responsible for teeth grinding and clenching. The treatment can go a long way to help save your teeth and relieve headaches and pains caused by this troublesome condition.
How are botulinum toxin injections performed?
Once the Doctor has determined and confirmed your areas of concern by means of detailed consultation, they will proceed. Using a very fine needle, your doctor will inject a small amount (0.1ml –0.2ml) of botulinum toxin solution into the required areas of concern. The needles used are very fine so most people experience only mild discomfort.
Where does botulinum toxin come from?
Cosmetic Botulinum toxin (a schedule 4 medicine) is derived from a bacterium called Clostridium Botulinum commonly found in plants (such as), soil, and the intestinal tracts of mammals and fish.
How long do botulin toxin treatments take to perform?
Treatment time can vary between 30 – 45 minutes, depending on the area(s) treated.

The full results of your treatment may take up to 14 days to take full effect. The results will last for an average of 3 – 4 months, depending on the condition of your skin, the area treated, amount of product injected, injection technique and lifestyle factors such as sun exposure and smoking.
Please follow these instructions in aid to achieving optimal results:

For 24 hours – do not rub or massage the treated areas as this could influence the effect of the product.

What is the difference between botulinum toxin injections and dermal fillers?
Botulinum toxin is a neuromodulator and botulinum toxin injections cause paralysis of the muscle by disrupting the nerve signalling causing the muscle to relax and the surface of the skin to smooth out. Dermal Fillers on the other hand are injections that restore volume and fill the skin to create a youthful appearance. Both treatments are temporary and are used together to create your desired aesthetic result.
