- LUMECCA™ IPL Treatments in South Africa
At Dr Nerina Wilkinson + Associates we use the advanced LUMECCA™ IPL technology by InMode.
LUMECCA™ IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments are specifically designed to help patients achieve a more even complexion with an instantly bright and healthy glow in less treatments than conventional IPL solutions.
What is a LUMECCA™ IPL treatment?
The light energy delivered by LUMECCA™ IPL (intense pulsed light) gently heats the upper layers of the skin. The heat is absorbed by the target areas and will stimulate the skin cells to regenerate. LUMECCA™ IPL (intense pulsed light) offers a superior solution (being the most powerful IPL technology available today) to improving skin complexion and reducing skin irregularities – resulting in clearer, smoother, and younger-looking skin.

Frequently asked questions about the LUMECCA™ IPL treatments
Our approach to LUMECCA™ IPL treatments
At Dr Nerina Wilkinson + Associates, our approach is bespoke and tailored to solve your specific skincare concerns.
Before we schedule any procedures, patients must undergo a comprehensive examination including a VISIA Skin Analysis. This allows us to create a personalised, results-driven, treatment plan and accurately track progress.
Dr Nerina Wilkinson has a set standard of individualised care and expertise which is reflected by the entire team. Our team of experts has a wealth of knowledge and continuously delivers outstanding results by using state-of-the-art medical devices and products, sparing no expense to create a safe and luxurious environment where all your skincare concerns can be addressed.
Each LUMECCA™ IPL treatment approach is completely bespoke and formulated around an individual’s concerns and desired results.
How do LUMECCA™ IPL treatments work?
Skin Rejuvenation (Photo Facial):
Light energy penetrates the dermis and is converted into heat energy. The heat causes controlled inflammation within the dermis after which the skin responds by releasing regenerative growth factors. Fibroblasts are also stimulated and produce new collagen and elastin, giving the skin a lifting and tighter effect.
Pigmented Lesions:
Light energy is absorbed by the pigmented lesion and converted to heat energy. This results in the pigment breaking up. The pigment then either desquamates (flakes) off the surface of the skin or is absorbed and removed by the lymphatic system, therefore, improving the appearance of sun damage and pigmented age spots.
Vascular Lesions:
Light energy is absorbed by the oxyhemoglobins (red pigment found in blood vessels). The light energy turns into heat energy and results in the coagulation of the blood vessels. The coagulated blood is then absorbed and removed by the lymphatic system improving the appearance of redness and broken blood vessels.

The ideal candidates for LUMECCA™ IPL Treatments include those who wish to achieve improvements in the following:

What areas can be treated with LUMECCA™ IPL treatments?
LUMECCA™ IPL treatments is used to combat signs of ageing, pigmentation, and vascular lesions on the neck, chest, face, back, and hands.
How are LUMECCA™ IPL treatments performed?
IPL is a wide spectrum light emitted by a xenon flash tube producing calibrated pulsed light. The energy is absorbed by substances called chromophores (targets), contained in the skin. These chromophores are then destroyed creating a healing response that can be seen as improved collagen and elastin, lightening of pigmented lesions, and reduction of skin redness and vascular lesions.
What are the benefits of LUMECCA™ IPL treatments?
After each session, patients notice significant improvements in the overall complexion and clarity of the skin.
LUMECCA™ IPL is extremely effective at improving the appearance of:
- Age spots (red/brown pigmentations)
- Small facial veins such as facial telangiectasias (spider veins) and poikiloderma
- Rosacea (redness)
- Freckles

ME® LINE Peels: The purpose of the ME LINE® chemical peel technique is to gently exfoliate your skin by dissolving the bonds between the cells in the top layer of your skin to stimulate cell turnover and as a result, obtain an even tone and healthy glowing skin.
Dermalux LED Light Therapy: LED Light Therapy uses a combination of pure visible red, blue and infra-red light to stimulate the deeper skin tissue. It can be used as a stand-alone treatment or combined with various other treatments to optimise results and assist in healing.

What are the possible risks and complications associated with LUMECCA™ IPL treatments?
When a qualified Skincare Specialist performs LUMECCA™ IPL in a sterile medical environment the risks diminish significantly.
If prone to fever blisters it is possible to experience a fever blister break out after IPL due to inflammation in the skin. It is important to inform your Skincare Specialist if you have a history of fever blisters, as fever blister medication needs to be started 3 days before the treatment to prevent HZ activation.
Rare adverse effects such as severe prolonged erythema, transient hypo- or hyperpigmentation, light scabbing, and small water blisters have been reported. While the majority of people do not experience these complications, it is important to be aware of these and discuss them with your Skincare Specialist.
LUMECCA™ IPL treatments: Before and After
We are passionate about educating our clients on safe, results-driven treatments and we, therefore, design each client’s Skincare Treatment Plan individually to deliver optimal results. To achieve this, we start with a computerised VISIA Skin Care Analysis that objectively measures and maps your skin followed by a detailed consultation with your Skincare Specialist during which specific concerns are highlighted and discussed.
What to do before the LUMECCA™ IPL Treatments
- Avoid any strong at-home facial treatments and/or exfoliation treatments the week before your appointment
- Avoid sun exposure (including tanning) for five days before your treatment
- Know the skincare products you are using at home, and bring a list, as having these details will assist your Skincare Specialist to make suitable product recommendations.
- Advise your Skincare Specialist regarding any medications, medical conditions, and/or past skin conditions; even over-the-counter medications can affect your skin, so it is good for us to know what may be contributing to your concerns as well as how your skin reacts to certain products.
- Should you be preparing your skin for a big event and you have never had a skin care treatment before and therefore don’t know how your skin will respond, it is recommended that you schedule an appointment six weeks before your big event with a follow-up appointment closer to the event date. This way you have time to address any negative skin reactions and get the maximum results from your treatment(s).
Be prepared to discuss your skin concerns and goals. Your Skincare Specialist is a licensed expert who will provide you with a detailed plan to best achieve your specific goals
We advise against any aesthetic procedures (including Botulinum Toxin, Facial Fillers, and Threads) 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after any minimally invasive skin care treatment.
