Frequently asked questions about Blemiderm Peels
Our approach to Blemiderm Peel treatments
At Dr. Nerina Wilkinson + Associates, we are committed to tailoring treatments that address the unique characteristics of each individual’s skin.
Before embarking on the transformative Blemiderm journey, every patient undergoes a thorough assessment, including our advanced VISIA Skin Analysis. This crucial step guarantees that we craft a treatment plan not just tailored to your individual needs, but one that ensures visible improvements over time.
With Dr. Nerina Wilkinson at the helm, our accomplished team continually strives for excellence, utilising only top-tier medical tools and products in the process.
What is acne-prone skin?
Acne-prone refers to skin that is more susceptible to developing acne, a common skin condition characterised by the appearance of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. This predisposition can be influenced by a variety of factors, including hormonal fluctuations, genetics, diet, and the skin’s oil production levels. Individuals with acne-prone skin often have to be more cautious about the skincare products they use, as certain ingredients can exacerbate breakouts. Maintaining a consistent skincare routine and seeking advice from a skincare specialist can help manage and reduce the frequency of acne flare-ups for those with acne-prone skin.
At Dr. Nerina Wilkinson + Associates, we utilise the Blemiderm Peel, an intensive clinical treatment that works carefully to cleanse blocked pores, and remove impurities and dead cells. Under our team’s expertise, every session is adapted to ensure transformative results, culminating in a clearer, rejuvenated complexion.
What is seborrheic skin?
Seborrheic skin is characterised by an overproduction of sebum, often leading to a greasy appearance, enlarged pores, and frequent breakouts. It can also pave the way for conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, presenting red, scaly patches, and often accompanied by dandruff. Genetic predisposition, hormonal fluctuations, stress, and certain medications can all exacerbate seborrheic skin.
At Dr. Nerina Wilkinson + Associates, we offer targeted treatments, such as a Blemiderm Peel, specifically designed for seborrheic skin conditions. Harnessing advanced techniques and products, we aim to balance the skin’s oil production and soothe irritation. Under our dedicated guidance, patients experience a noticeable reduction in skin oiliness (excess sebum) and a balanced complexion.
How do Blemiderm Peels work?
The Blemiderm Peel treatment commences with an in-depth consultation in our clinic, followed by an intensive in-clinic chemical peel session designed specifically for acne-prone and seborrheic skin. This procedure offers a multifaceted approach to address the range of factors that cause acne, thus paving the way for clearer skin.
It is typically recommended that clients schedule their Blemiderm Peel during a time when they can relax for the rest of the day post-treatment. During the procedure, the skin will undergo deep cleansing prior to the application of the Blemiderm Chemical Peel. Following the application of the Blemiderm Peel, a specialised mask might be applied, followed by a moisturiser and SPF.
As clients embark on their journey to improved skin health, our dedicated team will provide detailed post-treatment care instructions, ensuring the best results are achieved and maintained.
Who is the ideal candidate for the Blemiderm Peel System?

What areas can be treated with the Blemiderm Peel?
This treatment can effectively address acne-prone and seborrheic areas such as the face, neck, and shoulders, promoting clearer and smoother skin. Whether you’re looking to deep cleanse blocked pores, improve skin texture, or tackle recurrent acne breakouts, Blemiderm Peels are a comprehensive approach to rejuvenate and restore your skin’s vitality.
How is a Blemiderm Peel performed?
Blemiderm Peels are executed by certified skincare experts within a pristine, clinical setting. Prior to the treatment, patients undergo a detailed assessment, including a VISIA Skin Analysis and a one-on-one consultation with a skincare professional. This provides a thorough understanding of the patient’s skin condition and requirements.
Once prepped, the patient is required to change into a robe, enabling the specialist easy access to areas such as the face, neck, and shoulders. The procedure commences with a meticulous cleansing of the skin’s surface, followed by the precise application of the Blemiderm Chemical Peel. Post-peel, a hydrating moisturiser and a protective sunblock are applied to the treated areas.
Post-procedure, it’s not uncommon for patients to notice reddening of the skin, a sensation akin to mild sunburn, and a slight tightness due to swelling. Some might also experience minimal peeling, dry skin, or heightened skin sensitivity in the following days. To assist in the skin’s recovery post-treatment, our skincare experts provide patients with comprehensive home care guidance, detailing the use of specific products that optimise and extend the benefits of the Blemiderm Peel.
What are the benefits of a Blemiderm Peel?
Blemiderm Peels are renowned for their potent action against acne and seborrheic skin conditions, providing patients with a clearer, more refined complexion. Upon completing the treatment, patients can anticipate a significant enhancement in the texture and luminosity of their skin.
The advantages of a Blemiderm Peel include:
- Fine line reduction
- Cell turnover increase
- Deep cleansing of pores
- Acne scar reduction (improves the appearance of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and post-inflammatory erythema ((PIE)
- Resurfacing of the skin to reveal a healthy and smooth complexion
With the Blemiderm Peel, not only are acne-related concerns addressed, but patients also experience an overall improvement in their skin’s vitality and appearance.
How long does it take to see results from a Blemiderm Peel?
The efficacy of Blemiderm Peel treatments can differ based on factors like an individual’s particular skin type, the severity of their acne, and their adherence to home care regimes and suggested lifestyle adjustments.
Nevertheless, many patients typically start noticing enhancements in their skin shortly after their first Blemiderm Peel treatment, as the skin’s texture and tone become refined.
As the skin undergoes its natural recovery, powered by the generation of new cells, there can be a significant decrease in both acne and associated scarring. It’s essential to note that a personalised skincare plan is provided after the initial consultation, ensuring optimal results.
How many Blemiderm Peel treatments do you need to see results?
The number of treatments required to meet the desired skincare aspirations will depend on the individual, and may be influenced by the severity of their skin condition. The treatment approach is determined during a consultation with our Skincare Specialist, which involves a comprehensive VISIA skin analysis. After a course of three treatments, an additional VISIA analysis is performed to assess progress and follow-up treatments may be suggested.
How long does it take to perform a Blemiderm Peel?
The Blemiderm Peel usually takes 45 – 60 minutes and includes:
- Cleansing
- Blemiderm peel application
- Crystal Fiber Mask application
- Application of moisturiser and SPF
How much does a Blemiderm Peel cost?
The average cost of a Blemiderm Peel is R 4 450. During a consultation we will conduct a VISIA Skin Analysis and you will be quoted accordingly.
The cost includes a bespoke aftercare pack consisting of relevant product minis to aid the recovery of your skin post-treatment.
How long is the recovery period for Blemiderm Peel peels?
For a few days, your skin may exhibit mild redness and feel sunburnt. Around the third day, some individuals experience slight peeling and dryness, which is a natural part of the skin’s rejuvenation process and can persist for several days post-treatment.
These symptoms, however, are signs of the peel’s effectiveness in targeting acne and revitalising the skin. To aid the recovery and amplify the treatment’s benefits, it is important that patients follow the post-treatment home care plan. By following this plan, the sensitivity and potential flaking typically wane within a week, unveiling a clearer, more vibrant complexion.
Are there alternative treatments to a Blemiderm Peel?
For individuals seeking solutions to acne-prone or seborrheic skin, and the accompanying challenges of fine lines, poor cell turnover, clogged pores, acne scarring, and a desire for a refreshed complexion, there are several alternative treatments we offer, including:
- LED Light Therapy: Dermalux LED harnesses red, blue, and near infra-red lights for painless skin rejuvenation. It is ideal for the treatment and management of acne, rosacea, scars, and post-treatment healing.
- 3D Bespoke Treatment: A tailored remedy blending a Chemical Peel, Superficial microneedling or Mesotherapy, and a specialised mask. This multifaceted approach tackles a range of concerns from pigmentation and acne to ageing, fostering skin regeneration and resurfacing.
- GFIT (Growth Factor Induction Therapy): Employing biotechnologically derived growth factors, GFIT rejuvenates skin by stimulating cell turnover. The AQ Dermastamp ensures deep infusion of these growth factors, encourages collagen production and stimulates cell renewal for enhanced skin texture and tone.
- 3D MD PRP (Dr. Vampire Facial Treatment): This innovative treatment harnesses your own platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to enhance skin texture, address pigmentation, and mitigate acne scars. With this procedure, we achieve a radiant, youthful skin appearance.

Are Blemiderm Peels safe?
Yes, when overseen by a qualified Skincare Specialist in a sterile medical environment, Blemiderm Peels are deemed safe. These treatments have been meticulously crafted to accommodate a wide spectrum of skin types, delivering consistent and effective results. Comprehensive evaluation and tailored guidance also bolster the suitability of the treatment for an individual’s distinct skin requirements.
What are the possible risks, side effects and complications associated with Blemiderm Peels?
When a Blemiderm Peel is applied by a trained Skincare Specialist in a sterile medical setting, potential risks are significantly reduced.
Rare adverse effects such as severe post-treatment erythema, sterile pustules, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, severe skin peeling, and crusting can be evident. Prolonged photosensitization of the skin and severe erythema have been reported up to 7 days post-treatment.
While the majority of people do not experience these complications, it is important to be aware of these risks and discuss them with your Skincare Specialist in advance.
Blemiderm Peels: Before and After
We believe in empowering our clients with knowledge about reliable, outcome-focused treatments, tailoring each skincare treatment plan to their individual needs. Your journey with us begins with a computerised VISIA Skin Care Analysis that objectively evaluates and maps your skin. This is followed by an in-depth consultation with your Skincare Specialist, where specific concerns are discussed and addressed.
What to do before the Blemiderm Peel
- For two weeks leading up to your treatment session, avoid receiving skin treatments that may result in irritated skin.
- Avoid direct sun exposure, including tanning sessions, for at least 5 days before the treatment.
- Retinols and AHAs should be avoided 5 days before the treatment.
- You should not use alternative hair removal methods, such as electrolysis, hair removal creams, laser hair removal, or waxing 7 days before your treatment.
- Be knowledgeable about the skincare products you use at home, and consider bringing a list to your consultation. This will help your Skincare Specialist make informed product suggestions.
- Inform your Skincare Specialist about any medications you take and past or present skin conditions. Understanding how your skin reacts to certain products and what might be affecting your skin is invaluable.
- If you’re prepping your skin for a significant event and are unfamiliar with how it might react post-treatment, consider scheduling your first appointment about six weeks in advance. This provides ample time to address any unforeseen reactions.
- Come prepared to discuss all your skin concerns and goals. Your Skincare Specialist, as a licensed professional, will provide a tailored plan to address your unique needs.
Please avoid any aesthetic procedures (such as botulinum toxin, dermal fillers, thread lifts) for 2 weeks before and after any minimally invasive skincare treatment.
Day of the Blemiderm Peel
If it’s your first treatment at the Skin Clinic, you will be asked to complete a brief medical questionnaire. Your Skincare Specialist will use this information to craft the most fitting protocol for you. Since the treatment involves the face, neck, and possibly the shoulders, a robe will be provided. The Blemiderm Peel process entails:
- Cleansing
- Extractions (if needed)
- Blemiderm peel application
- Crystal Fiber Mask application
- Application of moisturiser and SPF
After the Blemiderm Peel
Following a Blemiderm Peel treatment, it’s common to experience some redness and a sunburn sensation (similar to a slight tingling sensation) for 24 hours post-treatment. Tightness of the skin can also be experienced due to possible swelling. Complete recovery typically takes 4 – 7 days.
