Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia affects one in four men and can be an embarrassing condition to deal with on a daily basis, resulting in men searching out male breast reduction surgery. Usually, it’s caused by a hormonal imbalance in males when their bodies decrease the production of testosterone and experience an increase in oestrogen. This ultimately causes their pectoral tissue to swell which resembles female breasts.

Gynecomastia has also been linked to several medications and health conditions that have been shown to increase one’s chances of developing the condition, however, there are ways to rectify it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Gynaecomastia Surgery?

Male breast reduction surgery removes fat, glandular breast tissue, and sometimes excess skin from the chest.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Male Breast Reduction?

Any man who experiences discomfort or embarrassment associated with these enlarged breasts, but doesn’t want to endure prolonged medicinal treatment can consult with Dr Nerina Wilkinson for a Gynaecomastia or male breast reduction procedure.

How Is Male Breast Reduction Surgery Done?

  • Incisions – The Gynaecomastia procedure agreed on during your consultation will determine the size and placement of the incisions. If opted for liposuction, small incisions are made in the targeted area so a suction tube may be inserted. However, if decided to remove tissue, Dr Wilkinson will make incisions in the natural folds of your body to hide any scarring.
  • Liposuction / tissue removal – If suction is being used, she will insert the tube and begin the process of removing the excess fat. However, if tissue is being removed, she will carefully remove the visible breast tissue to give you the desired results.
  • Finishing touches – Once the ideal amount of tissue or fat has been removed, the incisions are closed using dissolving stitches and the area is cleaned before a bandage is applied.

At What Age Can You Have Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

Most men over the age of 18 are eligible for male breast reduction surgery

Can Breast Tissue Grow Back After Gynaecomastia Surgery?

When glandular tissue is removed, it is unable to grow back. However, because liposuction is included in most male breast reductions, the best way to maintain your excellent results is to continue with a healthy lifestyle after your procedure.

How Long Is The Recovery After Male Breast Reduction?

You’re likely to feel tired and sore for a few days following your surgery, but you’ll be up and about within 12 to 24 hours. Most of your discomfort can be controlled by medication prescribed by your doctor. Within 2 – 4 days, the dressings and drainage pipes (if needed) will be removed, and you will start to wear a compression garment supplied by us; you should wear it 24 hours a day for 6 weeks. Although the stitches are dissolving there will be little knots to come out 10 – 14 days after surgery, but the swelling may take four to 6 weeks to disappear. The final results will only be determined after 3 months.

How Do I Know If I Should Have Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

To see if male breast reduction surgery is the best procedure for you, always start with a professional consultation with qualified and experienced cosmetic surgeon for an in-depth analysis of your body features and to reach a good understanding of your concerns and goals.

The

Procedure

During the initial consultation, the tissue of your chest is photographed and examined in order to make an informed decision of the best course of action. There are two options for a male breast reduction, one of which being liposuction of the affected area, which is usually effective.

However, if there is a large amount of excess tissue, the other option is more ideal, which involves trimming away all of the tissue and fat you want to be rid of.

It’s vital that you’re honest about your expectations of the surgery, so there’s no miscommunication. Moreover, you should inform Dr Wilkinson of any medical conditions you suffer from, medication you’re taking, and whether or not you’re a smoker. As all of these factors can impact whether or not she deems you fit to undergo this procedure.

  • Incisions – The Gynaecomastia procedure agree on during your consultation will determine the size and placement of the incisions. If you opted for liposuction, small incisions are made in the targeted area so a suction tube may be inserted. However, if you decided to remove tissue, Dr Nerina Wilkinson will make incisions in the natural folds of your body to hide any scarring.
  • Liposuction/ tissue removal – If suction is being used, she will insert the tube and begin the process of removing the excess fat. However, if tissue is being removed, she will carefully remove the visible breast tissue to give you the desired results. These incisions are similar to mastopexy.
  • Finishing touches – Once the ideal amount of tissue or fat has been removed, the incisions are closed using dissolving stitches and the area is cleaned before a bandage is applied.
  • You can expect to feel a significant amount of pain for a few days, which can be remedied with the prescription medication. Patients are reminded to keep the area as clean as possible as this can fight potential infection. Most patients have reported being able to return to work within a few days of undergoing the procedure. However, exercise should be avoided for at least a week to avoid unnecessary strain on the area.
