Ear Surgery

If you feel as though your ears are oversized, too small, or even protrude out too much consider otoplasty. Many people undergo ear surgery to help them feel better about their appearance emotionally and physically. Dr Nerina Wilkinson offers this procedure efficiently and discreetly to those looking for a change.

There are two main causes of protruding ears. One of these relates to an abnormal anti-helical fold (located inside the border of your ear), and the other relates to the arrangement of your concha (the depression located in the exterior section of your ear, leading to the central opening). A vast amount of patients who would like an ear operation have a combination of the two problems. Fortunately, we can address both simultaneously with an otoplasty procedure.

FAQ

Who Would Benefit From Ear Surgery?

If you’ve struggled your whole life feeling as if your ears aren’t in proportion with the rest of your face, you can consider undergoing ear reshaping. Since your ears are a prominent feature of your visage, you may feel like people notice them as much as you do. But, this is easily rectifiable by undergoing an otoplasty.

Children with prominent ears tend to be teased at school. Which is why Dr Nerina Wilinson always suggests to parents that if they are considering correcting their children’s ears, that this should be completed before their school-going years. The cartilage is much softer at this young age and therefore the results are improved due to easier reshaping of the soft cartilage. Psychologically it is best to improve the shape of a child’s ear before it even becomes a problem later in their adolescent years.

What To Expect From Your Otoplasty?

Once you’ve made a full recovery from your cosmetic ear surgery and the stitches have been removed, you can expect an astonishing boost in self-confidence. Moreover, you’ll also be able to show off your enhanced features with that haircut you’ve been dying to get but couldn’t because of your protruding ears. Young girls are able to wear ponytails and not be concerned about the visibility of their protruding ears.

Are There Any Risks Involved?

As expected, there are certain things that can go wrong both during and after your surgery. However, complications from surgery are extremely rare. But it’s imperative to be aware of the possibility of something going wrong.

This can be done by you conducting research into the topic of otoplasty and by asking Dr Nerina Wilkinson the appropriate questions during your consultation.

The

Procedure

During our meeting, it’s vital for you to be honest with Dr Nerina Wilkinson regarding your expectations from your ear surgery. It helps both you and her if you are both on the same page. You should also inform her of your medical history and whether or not you’re taking certain chronic medications. She will examine your ears to asses what corrections need to be made.

From there, she addresses the risks and benefits of undergoing this procedure and discuss your options. Then, she will advise you on what the best procedure would be to correct the shape of your ears.

Whether you’re an adult or a child, cosmetic ear surgery is safe, and only lasts for a mere two hours under local anaesthetic. The entire procedure involves these three steps:

  1. Incisions – Small sutures are made in the natural creases behind each ear, in order to hide any scarring that may occur.
  2. Reshaping and readjustment –The flat protruding antihelical fold is reshaped to form a tube using specialized internal sutures. At the same time, the enlarged concha is reduced and readjusted. Any other problem areas that were discussed during your consultation are dealt with at this time.
  3. Stitching up –  She utilises dissolving stitches to close the incisions before cleaning the entire area.

After your procedure, you will be required to wear a large protective head bandage for 7 days to maintain the new shape of your ears. The stitches dissolve naturally and you will be expected to wear flesh-coloured plasters over the incisions behind your ears for 3 weeks. You can expect any bruising and swelling to be gone within three weeks.

If you need more information on how best to recuperate, this will be discussed in your consultations.

“Dear Nerina, in today’s world it is often difficult as a parent to be teaching a child values especially in a world where “selfies” are part of their lives. As you know I struggled with the decision on whether I should proceed with Cloe’s ear surgery. I must however admit, with your caring advice, I am so glad I decided to push through. My little girl is still as beautiful as she was before the surgery, however I now get to see so much more of her as she sends me daily pictures at work, looking happy and confident with her pigtails and her friends.”
