What Makes Skin Look “Expensive” | The Science Behind Naturally Radiant Skin

There is something about healthy-looking skin that instantly catches the eye.

Recently, during a VISIA Skin Analysis at Dr Nerina Wilkinson + Associates, one of our patients was asked a simple question: What would you like to achieve with your skin? Her answer was equally simple:

“I want my skin to look expensive.”

It was a phrase that stayed with us – because, in just a few words, it described something many of us recognise, but perhaps struggle to define.

When we describe someone as having “expensive-looking skin”, we are rarely talking about flawless, poreless perfection. Instead, we are referring to skin that appears healthy, smooth, luminous and exceptionally well cared for. It reflects light evenly, appears refined rather than overtreated, and has a natural radiance that no filter can truly recreate.

While social media may attribute this look to genetics, makeup or the latest trending skincare product, the reality is far more scientific.

So, what actually makes skin look “expensive”? And, more importantly, how do we create it?

What Makes Skin Look “Expensive”?

“Expensive-looking skin” may be a beauty trend, but from a clinical perspective, we would describe it simply as excellent skin quality.

Skin quality encompasses far more than whether your skin is glowing on a particular day. We consider hydration, texture, collagen and elasticity, pigmentation, pore appearance, barrier function and overall luminosity.

When these elements are well balanced, the skin develops a smoother, more uniform surface. Light is reflected more evenly, creating the healthy radiance that we associate with youthful, well-maintained skin.

Importantly, this is not about creating perfect skin. It is about creating healthy skin.

The Five Characteristics of Naturally Radiant Skin

Hydration You Can See

Hydration is one of the foundations of luminous skin.

When the skin is adequately hydrated, the surface appears smoother and more supple, allowing light to reflect more evenly. Dehydrated skin, in contrast, can appear dull, tired and crepey, even when there are no significant underlying skin concerns.

Professional treatments that support hydration can be particularly beneficial when combined with consistent medical grade skincare at home.

This is where the right combination of in clinic treatment and home care becomes important. Rather than continually adding products, the focus should be on identifying what the skin requires and supporting its function consistently.

An Even, Healthy-Looking Skin Tone

Radiance is not only about brightness. It is also about uniformity.

Pigmentation, photodamage, redness and vascular irregularities can interrupt the way light reflects from the skin, contributing to an uneven complexion and a less luminous appearance.

For suitable candidates, technologies such as Lumecca IPL can be incorporated into a personalised treatment plan to address concerns including pigmentation, sun damage and diffuse redness.

The objective is not to create an artificially bright complexion, but to improve overall uniformity and allow the skin to appear clearer and more balanced.

Refined Skin Texture

Texture is one of the first characteristics we notice when we look closely at skin.

Enlarged pores, acne scarring, fine lines and surface irregularities can all affect how evenly light reflects across the complexion.

Improving texture often requires more than exfoliating the surface. Certain professional treatments work by stimulating the skin’s natural repair processes and encouraging collagen remodelling.

Depending on the individual skin and treatment objectives, this may include Medical Dermarolling, Erbium laser resurfacing or fractional laser treatments.

Each modality works differently. The appropriate treatment therefore depends on the patient’s skin type, concerns, tolerance and long-term treatment goals rather than following a one size fits all approach.

Strong Collagen Support

Collagen is one of the primary structural proteins responsible for the skin’s firmness, resilience and support.

As we age, collagen production naturally declines. Over time, this contributes to changes in skin thickness, elasticity, firmness and the development of fine lines.

Supporting collagen production is therefore an important component of long-term skin health.

For patients with deeper skin tones, our Signature Forma HydraLyft combines carefully selected InMode technologies to support collagen stimulation, hydration and firmness, with minimal downtime and consideration for melanin rich skin.

Rather than altering the architecture of the face or creating an overtreated appearance, the focus is on improving the quality and condition of the skin itself.

A Healthy Skin Barrier

Even the most advanced treatment plan cannot replace healthy daily skin habits.

The skin barrier plays an essential role in maintaining hydration, limiting water loss and protecting the skin from environmental stressors. Supporting barrier function is therefore fundamental to maintaining healthy skin. This is why professional home care forms an important part of every successful skin journey.

Because healthy skin is not created by just one treatment. It is built through consistency.

Why Does Healthy Skin Glow?

There is simple science behind that coveted glow.

A healthy skin surface is smoother and adequately hydrated, while healthy collagen provides structural support within the dermis. When light reaches the skin, these characteristics allow it to reflect more evenly across the surface.

In contrast, dehydration, rough texture, inflammation and uneven pigmentation can disrupt this reflection, making the complexion appear duller and less uniform.

This is why true luminosity cannot simply be applied with makeup. It begins with the condition of the skin itself.

Skincare and Treatments: Why You Need Both

We often think of skincare products and professional treatments as separate approaches, but the most effective skin journeys incorporate both.

Daily skincare products supports hydration, barrier function and protection from environmental damage, while professional treatments can stimulate biological processes that topical products alone cannot achieve.

The key is understanding which treatment is appropriate for which skin, and at which stage of the individual skin journey.

At Dr Nerina Wilkinson + Associates, treatment plans are never one size fits all. Skin type, concerns, lifestyle and long-term skin health goals all contribute to the treatment journey we recommend.

Why Your Skin Needs a Personalised Approach

Contrary to popular belief, there is no single treatment that creates a beautiful “glow up” for everyone. Skin types, skin conditions, lifestyle factors (and so much more) all have a role to play in what is most suitable for each person…

Just looking at lighter skin tones seeking to improve overall brightness, smoothness and luminosity – here we might recommend our Signature Glow Getter which combines InMode technologies with customised chemical peels to enhance overall skin quality and natural radiance.

For darker skin tones on the other hand, we might recommend our Signature Forma HydraLyft which has been carefully designed to support hydration, firmness and collagen production while considering the specific needs of melanin-rich skin.

Both treatments are built around the same philosophy: rather than creating an artificial glow, we aim to optimise the health and quality of the skin so that radiance becomes a natural result.

The expertise lies in understanding the science of skin and how and when to combine complementary modalities.

Can Anyone Achieve “Red Carpet Skin”?

Absolutely – but probably not in the way Instagram would have you believe.

The healthiest looking skin is rarely the result of a last minute treatment before an event. It is usually the result of months, or even years, of consistent skincare, preventative care and carefully planned professional treatments.

This is the same philosophy we apply to every patient at Dr Nerina Wilkinson + Associates.

Beautiful skin is not created overnight. It is cultivated through intelligent planning, evidence based treatments and a long-term commitment to skin health.

Healthy Skin Never Goes Out of Style

Beauty trends will continue to change. New ingredients will launch, new technologies will emerge and the definition of “perfect skin” will continue to evolve. But healthy skin will always be beautiful.

Naturally radiant skin comes from supporting the fundamentals: hydration, collagen, texture, pigmentation and barrier function. When these elements are addressed together, the result is skin that appears fresh, refined and naturally luminous.

Because the most beautiful skin is not the skin that looks filtered. It is the skin that radiates health.
